Nate drove us down to the train tracks by the Boardwalk, where we walked along the mossy bridge, talking about our favorite movies, where Nate is thinking about going to college (somewhere in Southern California, so it can feel like out of state but be in-state cheap), and whether or not Mr. Ducca, the musical theater teacher, was dating Mr. Gillis, who taught econ (their subjects are too different to merit all the time they seem to spend together during zero period).

When the light began to fade, Nate insisted on going back to Belfry to pick up Leibovitz and drive me home. I had him drop me off a few blocks from my house, to avoid any potential questions.

Walking in the front door, I nearly crash into Dad. He and Mom are throwing on their coats.

“Oh, hey, hon,” Dad says. “Off photoshooting?”

“Yeah,” I say. That’s a good enough excuse. “Where are you going?”

“To Belfry, actually,” Mom says, adjusting the Banana Slugs tote draped over her shoulder.

“Huh? Why?” I stand in the way of the door.

“There’s another meeting tonight, with the PTA and the administration,” Dad says. The way he adjusts to face me directly makes me nervous. “It’s about the VEIL thing. The Gehrig family wants to fight his suspension. They hired a lawyer. We’re going to talk about what we want to do.”

“Hired a lawyer to do what?”

Mom and Dad share a look. “The Gehrigs want to sue the school,” Mom says. “And VEIL.”

“The school has a lawyer, too,” Dad adds. “Some of the parents are lawyers. Everyone wants to avoid a lawsuit. But we have to talk about options.”

I drop my bag by the entryway table. “I don’t understand.”

“Tag’s parents are upset that VEIL revealed his identity.” Mom slips into Lecture Voice and my fingers curl. “And there are some parents who think that VEIL lacks adequate safeguards for underage users. They think a lawsuit might be the only thing to make VEIL change its rules.”

“What? Change what rules?”

“Well, for one thing, VEIL should know which of its users are under eighteen. And they might consider blocking those users from seeing or posting some content.”

“So the First Amendment is good and censorship is bad, except if you’re a kid?” I flail my hands around my head, shutting my eyes. So many thoughts fly around in my mind, making it hard to put them in an order my parents will understand.

Dad tilts his head. “That’s being a bit simplistic, Ivy, don’t you think?”

“No, I don’t think!” I snap. “You don’t understand VEIL. Not at all. You can’t imagine why someone would want to post things without revealing who they are? You can’t see how what Tag posted proves that we need a space for that?”

“You said you aren’t even posting to the site,” Dad says gently. “I don’t understand why you’re getting so upset.”

His tone, like I’m a misguided student in his class, is the last straw. “Because I don’t know the people on VEIL, but they’d have more respect for my work than anyone I know in real life.
